The Story of the Built-In Reading Nook
For me, built-in cabinetry and furniture is the cross section between style and functionality so when my client reach out wanting to create create a built-in reading nook with plenty of storage for her daughter’s bedroom as a 3rd birthday gift. I was excited to create a timeless piece that would not only be a functional storage solution but also be the anchor of the room.
The Before: Open wire shelving lacks the warmth and visual appeal of solid wood or closed cabinetry. Additionally, the open design of wire shelving can sometimes result in a cluttered appearance, as items are visible from all angles.
With careful consideration of the my clients needs and the room's aesthetics, I began by drafting a plan that maximized space utilization and functionality. Custom-built shelves and cabinets were meticulously crafted to house books, toys, and belongings, keeping the area tidy and organized.
Central to the design was a cushioned storage bench. This designated reading spot beckons children to immerse themselves in tales of adventure and imagination. The bench top is solid hardwood construction for a lifetime of strength and stablitliy but with help of Sugatsune’s "Aileron Lift-Assist Soft-Close Hinge Set and Lid Stay”, the bench lid lifts easily, stay in the upright position, and lowers softly when closed which coordinate nicely the smooth soft-closing hinges on the base cabinets. It is important to invest in quality hardware, cabinet hinges and drawer slides are the interface between a person and the piece.
Ample closed storage space neats up a room and adds interest to the space. Quality cabinet hardware makes all the difference.
This was a fun project, my client and her daughter were thrilled with outcome and so excited to decorate their new built-in and cuddle up with a good book. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to provide a beautiful storage solution that will serve this family for years to come!
